Developer reveals more details on St. Elmo Apartments project in Bethesda (Photos)

The Lenkin Companies held another public meeting last night in Bethesda, to reveal more details regarding the St. Elmo Apartments project. A 21-story tower, it will span the block between St. Elmo Avenue and Fairmont Avenue, and share the existing plaza will the Bainbridge Bethesda. Most of the information and images released last night were already published in my report last month, but here's what's new:

Attorney Steve Robins said he expects their amended sketch and preliminary plans to be filed with Montgomery County next month, with an expected Planning Board public hearing after the summer. A site plan will follow.

As I mentioned last month, the Bainbridge plaza will be widened by 20 feet. The architect explained the rationale behind the increase as providing better angled views outside of the buildings.

Units available will range from 1-bedrooms to 1-bedrooms with den, to 2-bedrooms and 3-bedrooms. The pool is currently expected to be on the main roof of the tower.

This is a project that has now been in the works for years, but it seems that each time they update their plans the quality of the architecture and overall design improves, so the delays appear to have actually helped..

Yawn... Meanwhile Dyer is still ignorant of the new condo deal not to far from St Elmo that is in foreclosure.

Just say no to Art Deco! Hey the 1920’s called and wants David Schwartz back.

Why does this tower need to look like it was built in 1925? Buildings should be of their own time, and NOT ape the past. This design firm is famous for its retro inspired traditional crap. Bethesda needs fresh and modern ideas, striking glass and metal towers, animated mixed use bases, and creative contemporary ideas. Not curved corner balconies and symmetrical retro towers clad in beige brick. If I was on the design review committee, I would give them zero points for design excellence. Great old buildings shoulld be preserved and celebrated, not copied.

Sorry, that’s David M. Schwarz, not Schwartz. I still don’t like them, even without the T. They need to revise this and create a contemporary building, and not copy a past style. Yes, Art Deco did create some fantastic architecture back in the 1920’s and 1930’s, but it is highly inappropriate in this day and age.

Hopefully they will make the tables there level when they rebuild. It's really annoying having my bumper of St. Ides keep sliding downhill off the table when I'm drinking with Bobbie D at 2 AM.

5:59: I was among the first to talk about the problems at the Claiborne project. Not a shovelful of dirt turned over there yet. Very old news. Toll Brothers is the only other condo in the works, and banks aren't going to foreclose on Toll Brothers. You can't foreclose on a completed condo building, only on individual condos.

Sounds like there is some disappointment in the design.

Has the new Bethesda design review board weighed in? Are their architects on that body giving input?

Dyer, your electioneering ads (such as the one in this article) show you always in a suit that is way too large for you, and a "clown" tie -- it is amazingly poorly knotted.

Use your hundreds of thousands in campaign donations to get properly fitted with some clothing, and taught how to tie a tie.

Sheesh, your photo looks like you were just released from prison and used your $100 on release to spend $10 at Goodwill.

7:08 PM Keep whatever you're doing in the Council building bathrooms to yourself please.

7:13 PM It will be outstanding to have new voices, maybe even a dissenting opinion on the Council! The current configuration hasn't served us well (witness the powerful vote to limit the council terms). Government and Planning by rubber stamp doesn't end well- that is how we got into this mess.
